Obama urges tribute to dads on Father's Day

Don't forget. Sunday is Father's Day, a day to let dad sleep late, get him breakfast in bed, give him a card or join him for a bicycle ride.

President Obama, the father of two girls, says it's a day to "pay tribute to the loving and caring fathers who are strengthening their families and country."

The president issued a proclamation Thursday, ordering the United States flag displayed on all government buildings for Father's Day.

"I urge all Americans to express their love, respect, and admiration to their fathers, and I call upon all citizens to observe this day with appropriate programs, ceremonies, and activities," the president said.

"Fathers must help teach right from wrong and instill in their kids the values that sustain them for a lifetime," the president said. "As they encounter new and challenging experiences, children need guidance and counsel. Fathers need to talk with their kids to help them through difficult times. Parents must also help their children make the right choices by serving as strong role models. Honest and hard-working fathers are an irreplaceable influence upon their children."

On the lighter side, Providence Journal columnist Mark Patinkin takes a look at Father's Day and the tradition of giving dad practical gifts on his special day.

"Try buying a vacuum cleaner on Mother's Day. You'd take your life in your hands," Patinkin writes.

Show the column to your father. He might get a kick out of it. And it might get you off the hook if you forget to buy a card.

If you're looking for things to do with dad on Father's Day, Lifebeat and Projothebeat offer plenty of ideas.

Whatever you decide to do, consider the president's advice: "I urge all Americans to express their love, respect, and admiration to their fathers, and I call upon all citizens to observe this day with appropriate programs, ceremonies, and activities."

And if you insist on buying dad a lawn mower, make it a riding mower.
