RICHMOND, Va. (AP) -- Free health clinics in 14 states, including one in Rhode Island, are getting financial help from Dominion Resources Inc. Richmond-based Dominion announced Tuesday that it's giving $1 million in grants to 100 clinics in states where it operates: Connecticut, Indiana, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, North Carolina, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Texas, Virginia, West Virginia and Wisconsin. The funding will be distributed generally in proportion to the number of Dominion workers in each state. The donations are being made through the Dominion Foundation. In Rhode Island, where Dominion employs about 30 people at the Manchester Street Power Station in Providence, the Rhode Island Free Clinic is getting a $5,000 grant. Dominion also owns Brayton Point Power Station in Massachusetts, which employs about 190 workers. The HealthFirst Family Care Center in Fall River will receive a $10,000 grant, and $5,000 grants are each being distributed to the Salem High Teen Health Center, the Salem Family Health Center, and the North Shore Community Health Center in Salem. Chairman, president and CEO Thomas F. Farrell II challenged other companies to do what they can to make sure health care is available to those who can't afford it and the uninsured.
