CRANSTON, R.I. -- Police officers on Monday evening interrupted what they said was a burglary in progress and arrested a Providence man. According to Capt. Robert W. Ryan, detective commander, Officers James Jennings and Matthew Ricci noticed a door open on the side of a duplex at 136 Arnold Ave. about 8:40 p.m. and also found an overhead door open on a garage. They said a cover on a car also had been partly removed. They then found a man "lurking in the shadows" at the back of the house, Ryan said. When Jennings questioned him the suspect, Dean Turmel, 42, asserted that he worked for the homeowner. Jennings said also that although it was raining, the man was not wet, and was bleeding from the lip and his right leg. The homeowner, whose name was withheld, arrived and told the officers she did not know the man. Jennings and Ricci arrested Turmel after what was described as a brief struggle. The officers found a camera in his pocket which was later determined to have been taken from inside the home, the police said. In the back yard they also discovered Turmel's jacket, which had gold jewelry taken from the house protruding from one of the pockets. They said Turmel got into the house through a basement window. Turmel was scheduled to be arraigned Tuesday at Kent County District Court on charges of burglary, resisting arrest and disorderly conduct. |
