PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Robert Clark Corrente, Rhode Island's U.S. attorney, announced Monday that he plans to resign, effective at midnight on June 26. Corrente, who worked for Hinckley, Allen & Snyder before his appointment, will join a private law firm as of July 1.

Corrente, a graduate of Dartmouth College and New York University School of Law, has served as U.S. Attorney since August 2004, when he was appointed by President George W. Bush and confirmed by the U.S. Senate.

In his resignation letters to President Obama and Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr., Corrente wrote: "It has been a great privilege to have served the country, the Department of Justice, and especially the people of Rhode Island," according to a news statement.

Senators Jack Reed and Sheldon Whitehouse announced in May that they have asked President Obama to nominate Peter F. Neronha, an assistant U.S. Attorney here since 2002 and a former state prosecutor, to succeed Corrente. The four-year appointment requires Senate confirmation.

Bitterly disappointed with AG performance said:

We in RI bid good riddance to a man that would have done anything to get to the judgship-what goes around comes around Mr. corrente. IN hopes that your underlings are right behind you and out the door..dulce and lou----You did a bitter disservice to the people of ri utilizing tax dollars for that spoof of an operation dollar bill. Celona was an idiot and innocent lives were damaged for years. C. lets retrofit this into something a jury might be- cases turned on their ears from hearing to hearing....well that didnt work so lets switch the ball....truth and justice is what he was supposed to represent-pitiful experience-see ya!

Bob Corrente... Goodbye and Good Riddance.

Bill Irons, Joe Montalbano, and Steve Alves must be jumping for joy.

Seven years, millions of dollars and thousands of FBI hours expended, and the best Corrente could do was two low life political hacks.

The 'Big Fish' obviously outsmarted Corrente and are still free as birds instead of being jailbirds. It looks like Corrente and his 'Operation Dollar Bill' was a big bust after all, or did the corruption go a lot higher than we all suspected.

All I know is that Corrente didn't do his job.
