Governor Carcieri told 200 people this morning at the annual meeting of the Governor's Workforce Board that the state's jobless rate for May rose above 12 percent from 11.1 percent in April.

"We are going to report tomorrow that the unemployment rate is going over 12 percent," Carcieri told the crowd gathered at Rhodes on the Pawtuxet in Cranston.

Carcieri also said, "We're in the thick of it" and talked about rising unemployment nationally. The U.S. rate in May was 9.4 percent. The rate in Massachusetts is 8.2 percent.

He said Michigan, with layoffs in the auto industry, would report a higher unemployment rate than Rhode Island.

Couldn't agree anymore what happends now to people that are still unemployed and collecting whom are about to run out of benefits? Also those GRADUATING IN THIS ECONOMIC TIME?

phil m said:

Couldn't agree more, Hejust doesn't want to be on top of the the list I guess??????

Chris said:

One key reason for the high unemployment in Rhode Island is that the state is suffering from a "brain drain," as evidenced by the previous comment.

Govstench said:

With a state with an economic recovery plan a disaster resulting with no job opportunities, no affordable housing with vacant houses sitting on the market, it is not surprising to see this figure increasing. This figure is really deceptive as the true unemployment in Rhode Island is about 25%! The ones that are not included have exhausted their benefits and are now scraping by on nothing.
This state is the poster child for the next Great Depression, which is about 18 months away.
The Government in this state is a joke. It is self serving with fat pensions for the politically coneected! Police, Fire, judges, and teachers enjoy fat pensions while people suffer. They should be ashamed of themselves for accepting this blood money and they want more of it. These are the pigs of society. I have lost all respect for them.

there will also be a lot less spending with many unemployed running out of jobless benefits in july for good.

He said Michigan, with layoffs in the auto industry, would report a higher unemployment rate than Rhode Island.

Shouldn't that read that he hopes Michigan will report higher?

Why couldn't the stimulus money have gone to create jobs for people then maybe we wouldn't have so many people losing homes etc. TF Green airport? HA! Making it bigger is a mistake, but we the people have no say do we, no one hears us little people. We are all going to have to pitch a tent somewhere because this is where this state is going.

Al said:

greg, I think the article mentions Michigan because for the past few months Michigan has been #1 in unemployment where RI has been #2.

Ric said:

What do you expect in a state with a high tax burden and a general assembly that promotes failure and punishes success? This state does nothing to promote businesses. They do everything to increase handouts and raise taxes and fees on an annual basis. When they try to make cuts, every group that lives off handouts shows up at the state house crying. Too bad the people who work to pay taxes can't do that. Until the state straightens out, cuts taxes, fees, reduces regulations, encourages job growth, and gets people off welfare, you'll continue to see higher unemployment.

until we rid our selves of the social democrats and the union bosses the R.I. economy will continue to decline.

Fed Up With the Dumb Comments... said:

Gregg, why is it always the Governor's fault? Where is Murphy, Paiva-Weed and the Lemmings in all this? Do I see another stupid budget being passed with no spending cuts and big tax increases?

Oh, there were 20,000 jobs created, but they were all for the Legislative and Judicial Branches.

Why would anybody in their right mind want to live here.

Paul Tarullo said:

Governor Carcieri is a lone wolf in a failing state: he recognized a long time ago that excessive taxes and gross government spending has dommed the sttate's economy.

Bill said:

Ric, Bruce, and Fed Up, it's nice to hear some people in this state get it. Great ideas we need people like yourselves in Government.

John said:

The "Govna" has no power to do anything in this state, so why bother ragging on him? He's got a fancy title and a chauffeur, that's about it.

Pretty soon the only gainfully employed people in this state will be public sector employees. Everyone else will have left..........

After reading some of the comments on here I am convinced that Rhode Islander's are truely some of the stupidest people on the planet.
Let me ask all of those who have commented and blamed Governor Carcieri, what can he do when he is facing an opposition in both the Assembly, and the Senate, that has a 90% democratic majority. Answer (since you are all to stupid to know)...Nothing! If any of you ever bothered to look at the real problems we are facing in Rhode Island, or at least study up on how the government operates, you might know that the governor can't get much done when the legislature won't lower business, personal income, and capitol gains taxes, to make it more attractive for businesses to operate in this rooting cespool of a corrupt, backward state.
Perhaps we wouldn't be topping the list of unemployed citizens if businesses could think of one good reason to open up shop here.
But that's OK, maybe if things get bad enough, the state legislature will just find a way to employ everyone in the workforce, close private enterprise completely, and give all Rhode Islander's what they really covet ... a state job!
Then we can have a truely socialist state.
And one last thing...every 2 years we get the chance to change things, ya know that whole electoral process. Yet instead of changing things in 08, here on the state level, once again Rhode Islander's, just voted for more of the same.

Andrew Jones said:

I could not agree more with most of the comments - This state is slipping towards the national laughing stock. What will it take for Carcieri to wake up, smell the Dunkin Donuts and resign? Many of the jobs you created are still around - congratulations - only problem is they are filled with your supporters, family members, cronies, and others who threw campaign contribution money to you. College grads from the 09 class, beware - move out of state NOW and count your blessings you are not subjected to this moron. What would this idiot be doing if he were not out making the state a worse place? Class A idiot.

Mike said:

WAKE UP RHODE ISLAND! This is what years and years of electing Socialist, anti-business Democrats has gotten us. How can you deny this fact when we have a 12% unemployment rate?! We have created a State full of union factory workers (and no factories). We need to create a knowledge-based economy here by luring in companies from the financial and technology sectors. RI workers from these industries will no longer need to commute to Boston for these jobs, which will generate more income tax revenue for the State and raise the standard of living for everyone. What we don't need are more low paying, low skill jobs in obsolete industries. We need to learn from the mistakes that Michigan
made.

Henry said:

Roll this around in your head. If you want the economy to change for the better, kick every one of the buffons up for re-election out on their rear. Take a hard stand against the unions and special-interest groups, and the economy will miraculously recouperate.

Ric said:

Again, we have in Andrew Jones an example of an individual who was failed by our public education system. Apparently he thinks the Governor has the powers of King Henry the II of the House of Plantagenet, and thinks the Governor can rule by decree. It doesn't work that way. We have a legislature and a governor. The Legislature writes and passes bills that the Governor signs into law. The Legislature is controlled by the Democrats, with very few Republicans in it. The Governor is a Republican. When he submits bill proposals to the Legislature, what do you think happens, they die in committee. The Governor can do nothing if the Legislature does not act. So maybe it's your Senator or Rep who needs to resign.

Tom said:

Wait until we add all the state retirees getting out before the new rules hit. The unemployed rate will be 15%.

Don said:

For all you partisan hacks out there, try this on! It's irrelevant who the Governor of Rhode Island is. Rhody has a virtually veto-proof Democrat controlled House and Senate. The General Assembly RUNS the State of Rhode Island. Speaker Murphy and Senate President Paiva-Weed run Rhode Island with absolute authority. They over-ride every veto, pass whatever legislation they please, and defacate on the Rhode Island taxpayer every chance they get. I ask you, when you look at the condition of Rhode Island, how can you consider the Democrat leadership of the General Assembly anything except ABJECT FAILURES? Just WHAT have they succeeded at over the past fourty veto-proof years? We await a rational and cogent answer.

On the same day of announcing how bad RI is in unemployment, the Governor comes out for the prostitution law. Don't you think he should be trying to get jobs created in the state and not shutting down more businesses?

More great news from the "Don" and his cronies these days. He seems to take great pleasure in announcing all negative situations that he has helped create to the nation. My what a genius. Again, "where are all those jobs you stated you would be creating when you 1st got elected. Maybe Gio the magician can give you a hand getting rid of the 1000 republicans for a good start." How many more days before our "Don" and his crack team of private sector 100K experts and ex-bankers will be gone? Maybe they can perform another Big Audit to go out with a bang. I hope his last 350K payout is sited in his audit with a request for clarification. By all.

Carcieri may have been elected governor twice, yet he is only a bystander, a casual observer of Rhode Island history as it continues on its path to self-destruction. He has demonstrated time and time again that he can not effect the most basic change at any level. All he can do is complain and denounce, like the famous image of Saddam waving his sabre in angry desperation.
