By Alex Kuffner WARWICK, R.I. -- State business leaders joined Governor Carcieri at T.F. Green Airport this morning to voice support for a proposed extension of the main runway. Speaker after speaker told the approximately 60 people at the press conference organized by the Greater Providence Chamber of Commerce that the runway needed to be extended in order to improve the airport and maintain its competitiveness. "The time to move forward is now," said Laurie White, president of the chamber. "That's why we are here today." The Federal Aviation Administration announced last month that it would back a plan to extend the runway 1,600 feet to the southwest, selecting the scheme over alternatives to expand north. A longer runway would allow cross-country flights to land at Green. Under the proposal, the owners of a number of houses and businesses in the construction area would be required to sell their property to the state. "I know this is a tough issue, especially for Warwick," Carcieri said. "At the end of the day, we can't move this airport. We need to make sure it flourishes." CommentsLeave a commentPlease be civil. Oh my gosh! The Chamber of Commerce finally takes a position on something!!!! Where is Laurie White when they are forever raising our taxes?!
I didn't renew my Chamber memership this year for one reason - it has become a self-serving revenue-focused business instead of the advocacy group it is supposed to be (sort of like most of the non-profits in this state.)

Let's get pouring the concrete! Get this done before we loose more business to Boston. The airport has been in Warwick for more than 60 years. Time to get over it or let the Airport not pay impact fees to the city.
