PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The Brown University Orchestra has picked up yet another ASCAP award for adventurous programming, after a season showcasing new music. This is the seventh time the student orchestra has been singled out by the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers for its unusual programs, and the ninth time the award has been bestowed on conductor Paul Phillips, who was in Chicago Thursday to accept the honors. Each Brown program this year featured a piece of contemporary music, including commissions from Joseph Schwantner and local composer Gerald Shapiro. ASCAP and the League of American Orchestras, which is holding its annual meeting in Chicago, present the award each year to orchestras of all sizes for programs that feature music written in the last 25 years. Brown was one of 26 orchestras nationwide to receive the award. |
