Attorney General Patrick C. Lynch announced he will intervene on behalf of ratepayers to oppose a 11.2 percent increase in residential electricity rates proposed by National Grid. "National Grid's request for a residential rate increase of a whopping 11.2 percent would be troubling under any circumstances, but coming at a time when so many Rhode Islanders are struggling in the midst of horrendous economic circumstances makes it especially burdensome to all of us," Lynch said in a statement. Lynch said he planned to send a staff member to a pre-hearing conference being held by the state's Public Utilities Commission on Friday with instructions to begin legal papers that would allow the attorney general's office to intervene in opposition to the rate hike. There's no reason for an increase, especially of this magnitude... Maybe National Grid figures they better get in all the increases they can before wind & solar power becomes more widespread (check out the "jellyfish wind appliance" on the net, for example). It's the first thing Lynch has done that I agree with and support.

So National Grid is trying to push is a 46% overall increase in rates, with 11.8% known to be a definite blatant money grab. The remaining 35% is the alleged increase in electric rates.
What is most interesting about that is most of RI's power isn't generated using oil. It's natural gas and coal. So why when the price of a barrel of oil goes up do we pay an increased price?

I wish he could throw those crooks in jail and start all over but I'm glad he's fighting for us. This increase really is ridiculous.
