ATTLEBORO, Mass. (AP) -- Officials say an anonymous donor has stepped forward with a $12,000 gift to keep Attleboro's four public pools open all summer. Because of budget cuts, the recreation department's pool budget came up about $13,500 short, meaning that the pools would have had to shut down early this summer. Recreation Director Dennis Walsh tells The Sun Chronicle of Attleboro that the anonymous gift, combined with a series of smaller donations totaling $3,200, will ensure that kids can get relief from the heat all summer long. With the city facing a $3 million budget deficit, there was concern that the pools would be closed all summer. But concessions by city workers provided some of the money to keep them open. Do they not have a clause that states the pools will only be opened for use if the temperature exceeds a reasonable temperature of say 80 degrees? Why would you budget to spend money on something that you don't need? We have had rain and maybe 4 or 5 days of "swimming weather" all year so far. Are they that clueless to realize the waste of money by keeping it open because of a calendar vs. weather?
