TIVERTON, R.I. -- Construction began this morning on Sandywoods Farm, which started several years ago as the vision of gentleman farmer Joseph Bossom for a sustainable arts and agricultural community that would help preserve the rural character of the town. Church Community Housing Corp., the Newport-based non-profit developer, secured a total of $15 million in financing from Rhode Island Housing for the project, which otherwise would have been left high and dry by the crash in the real estate market. Workers began clearing the site for the installation of roads and utilities for 50 rental cottages and 24 single-family homes geared to various income levels. The enclave will include about 94 acres of open space, and a 22-acre working farm and produce market, with studio, gallery, and performing space for artists. |
