PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- A Woonsocket man was sentenced to nearly three years in prison Friday for writing bad checks totaling more than $280,000 to buy merchandise at retail stores in Rhode Island, Massachusetts and Connecticut. Edward Marcelli, 32, received a sentence of 34 months in prison after pleading guilty to one count of conspiracy to transport merchandise taken by fraud in interstate commerce. Judge William E. Smith, who imposed the sentence, also ordered Marcelli to pay restitution of $283,033.45 to cover the bad checks that were used to purchase the merchandise. The authorities said that between April 2004 and April 2005 Marcelli solicited three people to open bank accounts and then used checks from this accounts to purchase the items. They said he knew there were insufficient funds to cover the checks. Marcelli was ordered to report to federal prison June 8. |
