Whitehouse: Sotomayor 'superb' choice for justice

WASHINGTON -- U.S. Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse, whose seat on the Senate Judiciary Committee will put him in the deliberations over federal appeals court Judge Sonia Sotomayor's fitness to serve on the Supreme Court, hailed her Tuesday morning as "a superb jurist.''

Rhode Island Democrat Whitehouse is traveling this week in Afghanistan and other nations in the region. Through his office in Washington, he issued this statement about President Obama's nomination of Sotomayor, which must be confirmed by a vote of the full Senate:

"By all accounts, Judge Sotomayor is a superb jurist who would bring distinction to the Court. Her nomination to be the first Hispanic justice is truly historic. I look forward to hearing from her during the Senate Judiciary Committee confirmation hearings that Chairman Leahy will convene this summer.

"The Senate's constitutional duty to provide the President with 'advice and consent' respecting Supreme Court nominees is one of our most important obligations, and one that I look forward with enthusiasm to discharging."

Maybe the 'esteemed' Senator should hold off on commenting on this, or any other nominee until the vetting process has been complete. What a partisan hack.

Thomas Jefferson said:

Sotomayor is on record as approving of legislating from the bench, i.e., bending the Constitution to fit her partisan opinions and beliefs.

This should be expected from the first Communist U.S. Prsident.

IMPEACH OBAMA!

Senator Whitehead is just a rubber stamp! I don't believe she is the 1st Hispanic, but the first female Hispanic.
I hope she, when she finishes the process, will turn out to be a conscientious, open minded justice.

I wonder if Wheldon would be as happy if there were an activist Nazi appointed instead of a socialist? It is the role of the Supremes to interpret laws vis-a-vis the Constitution as written. It is not to impose personal beliefs into law.
She has stated that she is the latter. She should be found unqualified.
Obama the Grate is on his way to having his oligarchy. Will the rest of us have the guts to resist?

I got really excited reading her bio. A daughter of a poor family whose widowed mother worked six days a week to support them. Graduate of Princeton and Yale Law School, a respected and experienced judge. I remember when women were not supposed to aspire to this kind of responsibility, and there were not qualified and experienced women in the pipeline.
Thirty years later, the co-eds have made good.
Yes, she knows what it's like to work hard and believe in your goals. What a validation of the American dream. Her perspective will be valuable on the Supreme Court.
