WARWICK, R.I. -- The 20-year-old man police were seeking in connection with a fight in which a man was dragged and run over by an SUV in the parking lot of a Wal-Mart store has been apprehended by police.

Patrick J. Oliveira -- whose last address was 528 West Shore Rd., but who police say no longer lives there -- was taken into custody around 2:20 p.m. Tuesday at Roger Williams Medical Center in Providence after police learned that he was there being treated.

Capt. Michael J. Babula said that police surmise Oliveira was being treated for injuries suffered around 10 p.m. Monday during a confrontation between two groups of youths in the parking lot of the Wal-Mart at 840 Post Rd.

Employees at the Wal-Mart called the police to report a fight in the parking lot between people from two cars. The employees saw people get out of one car and converge on the white SUV, Police Chief Stephen M. McCartney said Tuesday morning.

As the SUV tried to elude the assailants, one of the assailants -- Jack P. Decker, 22, of 277 Atlantic Ave. -- apparently got caught and dragged by the SUV, McCartney said. The SUV then struck a parked car in the lot, and it appears that Decker may have been run over by the SUV during that crash, McCartney said. Decker was in critical condition at Rhode Island hospital Tuesday morning.

Babula said the police believe the incident may have begun as a narcotics transaction. In addition, he said some of those involved may have a history of conflict with each other.

Oliveira was being held at the Warwick Police Station, where he is expected to be arraigned around 9 p.m. Tuesday. Police said they were also seeking others who may have been with Oliveira the night of the confrontation, including two or three young men and one young woman ranging in age from late teens to mid-20's.

The original version of this story was posted at 7 a.m.

After the SUV crashed, the police say it left the parking lot. People in the other vehicle picked up Decker and drove away, McCartney said. Less than a mile away, at the CVS store at Warwick and Atlantic avenues, the people with Decker realized he was seriously injured and called 911 for a rescue, McCartney said.

Decker was taken to the hospital, and the others in that car were taken to the police station for questioning. The police are still investigating, McCartney said Tuesday morning. They've interviewed nine people -- two adults and a juvenile this morning, three adults who were in the car with Decker and three others last night, Babula said.

The police issued a broadcast for the SUV as they attempted to locate it and then began collaborating with the Providence police when that department towed a vehicle whose description was similar to the white SUV, McCartney said.

That SUV was towed to the Warwick police station, and the police believe it was the vehicle involved in the escape and crash, Babula said. He would not name the person who owns the vehicle because he said the police do not believe that person was immediately involved in the incident. Babula said he believes the SUV belongs to a friend of those who were traveling in it.

McCartney said Oliveira may have been injured when the SUV struck the parked car in the Wal-Mart parking lot.

Well, you want to be billy badazz, this is the price you pay. Now we have to hear about it on the news for the next month. I just hope, if the injured person recovers from his injuries, maybe he learns a lesson about the risks of being a punk.
