By C. Eugene Emery Jr. EAST GREENWICH, R.I. -- Despite a unanimous rebuke from the Planning Board, the developer of a controversial Walgreens drug store proposed for the corner of Main Street and First Avenue wants to move ahead with the project. Town Planning Director Lee Whitaker said Friday he received word from a lawyer for Arista Development that the company wants its zone change request to be heard by the Town Council, anyway. On Wednesday, seven members of the Planning Board unanimously turned down the proposal for a variety of reasons, including concerns about the traffic it would generate, and recommended that the council reject the zone change Arista is seeking. Changing the zoning designation would allow Walgreens to have a drive-through pharmacy window, but it would also mean that the company would need 14 variances from the Council. gemery@projo.com / (401) 277-7442 |
