SOUTH KINGSTOWN. R.I. -- In a development designed to advance biomedical research throughout Rhode Island, the National Institutes of Health has awarded the University of Rhode Island a five-year, $18 million grant -- one of the largest in the university's history.

The award will benefit not only URI, but several other Rhode Island colleges and universities through a research network that was established during earlier biomedical research grants. With this award, the grants total more than $42 million.

This grant will flow through URI's College of Pharmacy. The funds will be used for work in the fields of molecular toxicology, cell biology and behavioral science.

"During the next five years, this new funding will support biomedical and behavioral science research projects of at least 22 faculty from the network institutions," Zahir Shaikh, URI professor of biomedical sciences and program director for the grants, said in a press release.

Said outgoing URI President Robert L. Carothers: "Collaborative, multidisciplinary learning is a hallmark of the research and education experience here at URI, and this biomedical research program is a prime example of how successful this approach to problem solving can be. The tremendous growth of this initiative and the exciting results it has already generated are a testament to the strength of our College of Pharmacy and the network it has built with other institutions around the state."

Other schools that will benefit include Brown University, Rhode Island College, Providence College, Salve Regina University, Roger Williams University and the Community College of Rhode Island.
