JOHNSTON, R.I. -- The police have charged two men with assault and disorderly conduct in connection with a fight at a party late Sunday night that left a 26-year-old man and his 45-year-old boyfriend hospitalized.

The victims, Jason Lombard, 26, of 20 Waterman Ave., and Michael L. Furtado, 45, of 26 Tower Ave., East Providence, told the police that they were visiting an outdoor party at 54 North Olney St. when they were assaulted by several people unknown to them.

Lombard said he was unsure what instigated the fight but that he was struck in the face, knocked to the ground and hit several times by an unknown object while he was on the ground. Furtado told a similar story. Both men displayed cuts and bruises around the face and were taken to Our Lady of Fatima Hospital where they each were treated for broken noses.

The police said that when they first visited the scene around 11:30 p.m. Sunday, the homeowner told them that nothing happened, but in their interviews they noticed small amounts of blood spatter on a white towel as well as on a dented lawn chair. They also found blood spatter on the shoes of the homeowner's brother, Michael LeFort, 25, of 93 George Waterman Rd., and on the shirt and shoes of Edgar R. Carlo, 51, of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., who was also at the party.

They said they subsequently learned that Carlo was on probation on a carrying a concealed firearm charge in Providence, and that LeFort had 11 previous arrests on charges ranging from second-degree sexual assault and unlawful entry to felony possession of marijuana and obstructing a police officer.

The two men were released Monday on $1,000 personal recognizance, pending a District Court hearing on June 3.
