Two Rhode Island students were honored in Washington, D.C., this weekend for their outstanding volunteer work during the 2009 Prudential Spirit of Community Awards. The pair, along with 100 other top youth volunteers from across the country, received $1,000 each as well as congratulations from former first Lady Laura Bush at the 14th annual awards ceremony, held at the Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History. The two winners are Emma Edwards, 16, of Barrington, and Christopher Clarkin, 13, of Charlestown. Emma, a sophomore at Barrington High School, helped lead a youth mission to Biloxi, Miss., last spring to rebuild three homes devastated by Hurricane Katrina. Christopher, an eighth-grader at Chariho Middle School, has been volunteering for the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service at Trustom Pond since he was 6 years old. Nearly 20,000 young people submitted applications for the 2009 awards program. The top middle and high school applicants in each state were selected in February and flown to Washintgon last week with their parents. In partnership with the National Association of Secondary School Principals, the Prudential Spirit of Community Awards were created 14 years ago by Prudential Financial Inc. to encourage volunteer activities and reward young role models.
