PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The state Department of Transportation and 14 formal-wear shops have joined forces to discourage underage drinking during prom season, the DOT said Friday.

A total of 10,000 tags will be put on tuxedo hangers with the message: "Thinking of drinking this prom season? Don't let this be your prom picture."

The tag shows a young driver being put into a police car.

"Proms should create lifelong happy memories," said DOT Director Michael P. Lewis in a press release. "These tuxedo tags will remind promgoers that underage drinking has serious consequences."

Impaired driving is one of Rhode Island's deadliest crimes. Approximately half of Rhode Island's highway fatalities involve alcohol and speed. Nearly 10 percent of these involve underage drinking.

Formal-wear shops approached for this campaign were eager to participate, the DOT said.

Participating shops are Men's Wearhouse in Providence, Warwick and Cranston; Carl Anthony Tuxedo in Cranston; East Greenwich Formals, East Greenwich; Ana's Bridal & Tuxedo, East Providence; A Formal Wear, Johnston; Viking Tuxedo, Middletown; Jim's Formal Wear, Narragansett; Classic Tuxedo, Providence; Gara's Mens Shop, West Warwick; Melissa's Bridal, Westerly; Celebrations Formals, Woonsocket; Waldorf Tuxedo, Warwick.
