PROVIDENCE, R.I. --- A Superior Court judge today ordered Troy Lassiter, a convicted murderer, held without bail for providing the state police with a false name last week. Beryl Kenyon, spokeswoman for Attorney General Patrick C. Lynch, said that Lassiter appeared before Magistrate Patrick T. Burke and was ordered detained at the Adult Correctional Institutions pending a probation-violation hearing on June 8. Lassiter was a co-defendant with Derick Hazard in the highly-publicized murder of David S. Andrews, who was gunned down in Providence in July 1996. Hazard, who has repeatedly denied any involvement in the murder, is serving a life sentence. In May 2005, after a previous conviction was overturned, Lassiter pleaded no contest to charges of murder, conspiracy to commit murder and several other charges. He was released after serving 7½ years at the ACI. Lassiter, 37, of 27 Glasgow St., Providence, also received a 29-year suspended sentence and probation. That means, a judge could order him to serve some or all of the remaining 29 years if he is found in violation of his probation. During last week's arrest, the state police said they learned that there were two outstanding warrants for Lassiter --- failing to appear in court for a cost review associated with the murder conspiracy charge, and a technical violation for a firearms possession charge. CORRECTION: An earlier version of this story, posted at 3:21 p.m., misstated the hearing Troy Lassiter will have on June 8, and gave the wrong title for Patrick Burke.
