Responding to predictions of a hot, humid air mass settling over Rhode Island Friday afternoon, state officials have declared their first ozone alert for the summer for Friday. Ozone levels rise when air pollutants caused by motor vehicles, industry and other sources react in the presence of elevated temperatures and sunlight. The state Department of Environmental Management believes those reactions will lead to unhealthy levels of ozone by mid to late afternoon. Ozone causes throat irritation, chest pains, shortness of breath and increased susceptibility to respiratory infections. Exercise may exacerbate conditions. Children, the elderly and those with lung diseases are most at risk. DEM suggests that motorists limit driving and that people restrict use of other gas powered engines or barbecues. What a deal!
