SOUTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. -- The games have begun.

The University of Rhode Island is hosting the 2009 Special Olympics Rhode Island State Summer Games, which will run through Sunday.

More than 1,500 athletes and 500 coaches and assistant coaches are participating.
