Sen. Reed pushes for new sunscreen rating system

PROVIDENCE , RI -- With the sunbathing season almost here, Sen. Jack Reed (D-RI) announced Tuesday morning he was renewing his effort to push the federal government to set clearer and more effective federal ratings for sunscreens.

Reed has introduced a bill that would require the federal Food and Drug Administration to set standards for so-called ultra-violet A -- UVA -- protection. Currently sunscreens are only rated for their protection against UVB radiation, the part of the sun's radiation that causes sunburn.

UVA radiation penetrates deeper under the skin, Reed said, causing it to age more rapidly or triggering other skin disease and cancers.

The FDA has been working on the standards for 30 years, he said, but has yet to issue rules that companies and consumers can use to judge how effective sunscreens are in blocking the UVB radiation. He said his bill would give the FDA six months to come up with and publish its standard for UVA protection.

"While the FDA delays, the American people are literally getting burned," Reed said. "The FDA needs stronger labeling regulations so parents know the products they are buying will protect them and their kids from both UVA and UB rays."

Are you kidding me? This liberal loon really thinks that this is the thing that is on his constituent's mind righ now, in the middle of a national recession, and is the best use of tax payer's money?

Typical liberal crazy, out of touch with reality.

Why is this news anyway?

With all that's going on in America - THIS is what he has to offer? Certainly earning his money. What a sad state when we keep returning these louses to DC. Yup...something he can run next term on - "I pushed sunscreen reform....AND I supported each and every Obama mandate!" Pathetic.

Well some people care about sunscreen and want products to be safe and do what they claim. I do think Our senators can do more than one thing at a time. I know that is not true of most men.

My, my, my! We have Whitehouse becoming a waterboarding hearing expert....Reed protecting our skin from the perils of the sunscreen fibbers....Langevin is silent as a church mouse....and Kennedy is blogging! I know they are all good people, and are all desperate to help rise us up above this disasterous time we are in. Healthcare crisis. Unemployment. Economy. War. Terrorism. Corruption. Homelessness and poverty. This does not, however, inspire 'hope' - it makes me think that four good people - four good leaders do not know what to do - they can't keep their eye on the ball, because there are no answers. And that, in itself, gives me the feeling of hopelessness. Come on, boys....you must be able to do better than this....I know you can...I think you can....so, rise above and help us all. Be the leaders we know you can be.

You folks who are deriding Senator Reed for this need to educate yourselves on the issue. Stop the silly comments; this issue actually IS important. The FDA has been "working" on these new requirements for YEARS with nothing to show for it! In the meantime, how many cases of skin cancer are due to people not getting the "burn signal" to get out of the sun, thinking they are being protected by wearing sunscreen that prevents the burn but doesn't protect against the most damaging part of the sun's radiation? Sunscreen with UVA protection has been available in Europe for years. It has only recently been available for use in the US, but there are no standards for consumers to measure it's effectiveness. The FDA needs to get on the stick and do it's job. If it takes prodding from a Senator to do it, then so be it.

Unlike the other commenters, I support Senator Reed's efforts
to have the FDA set standards for sunscreens. I need to use them
and it's hard to know which ones are effective and which ones
aren't. Environmental Working Group has rated sunscreens and
that has been a great help but it is the FDA's responsibility to
ensure that sunscreens are effective. Skin cancer is one of the
most prevalent cancers in this country.
