SEEKONK, Mass. -- Shane Murphy, chief officer aboard the U.S. cargo ship attacked by Somali pirates last month, has been invited to march in the town's Memorial Day parade on Saturday. Murphy, in Washington, D.C., said he will try to make it. If he does, he'll march with the veterans of past wars, say organizers. The parade starts at 10 a.m. at the high school and ends at the Dr. Kevin M. Hurley Middle School. On May 27 the board of selectmen will present Murphy with a proclamation recognizing his valor. Murphy was second-in-command of the Maersk Alabama when Somali pirates hijacked the cargo ship April 8. During the attack, Murphy triggered an emergency signal and helped secure crew members in a safe room. He took command after the pirates took Capt. Richard Phillips hostage in a lifeboat. On Easter Sunday, Navy snipers killed three of the pirates and rescued Phillips. |
