The Rhode Island Public Transit Authority and the state Department of Environmental Management are kicking off the summer's air quality alert season at 5 p.m. Friday at Providence's Waterplace Restaurant & Lounge with appetizers, a cash bar and lots of brochures, pamphlets and bus schedules.

Each summer, on days when ozone levels reach harmful levels, the state issues alerts and RIPTA offers free bus service.

The Waterplace restaurant is at One Finance Way, across from the Providence Place mall.
