The state has identified the10th probable case of swine flu, in a Coventy child younger than 10 who is a close contact of a Coventry adult who also had a probable case. The child has recovered and was never in school while ill. Eight probable cases from Rhode Island are still pending at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. One Rhode Island case was confirmed as swine flu and another was found to be an ordinary seasonal flu. Health Director David R. Gifford said Tuesday that the state's continuing monitoring of school absenteeism, hospital emergency rooms and doctor's offices has not turned up any patterns that would suggest widespread sickness. But, in a typical flu season, it takes three to five weeks for the virus to peak, and this outbreak is still in its first week. Gifford said it would be a mistake to curtail vigliance now, as the nature and extent of this epidemic remains unknown. |
