PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Happy Endings? -- a documentary about Rhode Island's Asian brothels -- premieres Sunday at 5:30 p.m. at AS220, 115 Empire St. The film offers rare interviews with two Korean women, whom the filmmaker called "Heather" and "Jen," along with a peek at the activity inside these "massage parlors" taken from a hidden-camera. The filmmaker, Tara Hurley, concealed the identities of the women, their customers and an undercover police detective, among others, by blocking their eyes and, in some cases, distorting their voices. The film -- which includes interviews with Providence Mayor David N. Cicilline; former Rhode Island Attorney General Dennis J. Roberts, who served from 1979 to 1985; and ACLU executive director Steve Brown, among others -- explores the debate surrounding a "loophole" in the Rhode Island law that has allowed indoor prostitution to flourish.
