CRANSTON, R.I. -- An inmate's alleged assault on another inmate Wednesday morning has led to the lockdown of the maximum security section of the Adult Correctional Institutions, according to a Department of Corrections spokeswoman.

Public visits have been cancelled for the day to the maximum security section. A lockdown means inmates in the affected section are kept in their cells and, if an inmate must go elsewhere, such as a dispensary, then the person is escorted in handcuffs.

The alleged assault happened about 8:45 a.m. in the maximum security section's gym, spokeswoman Tracey E. Zeckhausen said. She would not provide details of the incident.

Visits to other parts of the prison have not been affected and they are not in lockdown. Maximum is not the highest security section of the ACI; the section referred to as supermax is.

The inmate who was the apparent victim has been taken to an undisclosed Rhode Island hospital for injuries that are not believed to be life threatening

Zeckhausen said the matter is under investigation by internal investigative units and the Rhode Island State Police. The state police could press charges following an investigation. Police charges are separate from sanctions that authorities within the correctional system could impose.
