PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- A Providence man died in a motorcycle crash Wednesday afternoon on Pleasant Valley Parkway after a police officer noticed him traveling at a high rate of speed.

Jason A. Smith, 29, of 170 Regent Ave., Providence, was pronounced dead at Rhode Island Hospital just 20 minutes after the accident was reported, according to Providence Sgt. Paul Zienowicz.

Zienowicz said the police officer who saw Smith operating at an estimated speed of more than 50 miles per hour in a 25 mph zone was walking on patrol in the area and broadcast a description of the motorcycle and the direction it was traveling. As a police cruiser came into the area, the police discovered the driver of a 2008 orange Honda motorcycle had lost control of the vehicle around 4:25 p.m., Zienowicz said.

The motorcycle tipped over, mounted a curb and then slid 60 to 70 feet along the curb before it struck a parked vehicle in a driveway at 596 Pleasant Valley Parkway, Zienowicz said. Smith was pulled along as the motorcycle slid, according to the police.

Providence rescue crews treated Smith at the scene and took him to Rhode Island Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 4:47 p.m., Zienowicz said.

No other vehicle was involved in the crash.

I have spent the past few years looking for old elementary school classmates whom I was very close with...Jason was one of them...Jason and I became good friends since the 2nd grade...I remember his mom Darlene, buttoning up my jacket for me while we were waiting for school to start...Her kindness left a mark in heart and I've always wondered what happened to my friend and his mom...I wondered how he was doing...I never thought that the day I found my friend, was also the day that I learn about his tragic accident...to Jason, if you can hear me, you were one of the best friends I've ever had in life...while all the other kids were making fun of this little boyish Asian girl, you made me laugh and smile and took away rain...thank you for being a there...I'll always remember you cool lunch box (lol) and the days we played "off the wall" during recess...
