Police investigate Warwick jewelry-store closing

WARWICK --- Police say they are investigating the closure of Strand Jewelers and resultant complaints from customers, some of whom say the business shut its doors without returning jewelry they had left there for repair or resale.

"Our detective division is working on an investigation, and we're working on making restitution wherever possible," Police Chief Stephen McCartney said Friday.

A local business for many years, Strand operated out of rented space in a building at 1191 Post Rd. McCartney said that the shop was most recently in the business of consigning items and jewelry repairs.

"When it's feasible, we're trying to make sure property is returned to people," McCartney said, adding that some of the consumer complaints are more complicated than just unreturned property. He said he could not be more specific at this time because of the pending investigation.

Capt. Michael Babula, head of the detectives division, said the company is owned by Daniel Martino and that it apparently closed abruptly a few weeks ago. He and McCartney said that numerous complaints have been filed with police about the business.

According to records on file with the Secretary of State's office, Daniel Martino incorporated as TEKKI Restoration and Repair Inc. in December 1990 and in February 1991 added the business name of Strand Jewelers. The company's status as a registered corporation was revoked in 1999, according to state records.

A call to Strand on Friday went unanswered, with no machine or answering service to pick up the call.
