PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- A Domino's Pizza deliveryman told police that he was beaten and robbed by three men when he tried to deliver a pizza in Mount Pleasant just before midnight on Wednesday.

This is the second time that a fast-food delivery person has been called to a vacant house and robbed in recent weeks, said Maj. Thomas Oates.

"That's the problem we're having with this vacant and abandoned houses," Oates said Thursday afternoon.

When Ceasar Lopez, 41, was ordered to deliver a pizza to the house at 54 Lynch St., he didn't know until he drove up that the house was actually vacant. But three men with bandanas over their faces were waiting for Lopez.

They beat him with a metal pipe and tried to drag him into the vacant house, but Lopez was able to pull free and drive back to the pizza shop, where he called for help, according to a police report.

Detectives found the pipe, pizza boxes and delivery bag, and Lopez's cell phone and hat and shirt at the scene. Lopez was treated at Rhode Island Hospital for his injuries.
