NEWPORT, R.I. -- Dr. Richard C. Anderson, a Newport orthopedic surgeon, surrendered his medical license Wednesday after he failed to complete treatment for opiate and cocaine addiction. Anderson, 48, had voluntarily sought the treatment but then discontinued it against the advice of the Physicians Health Committee of the Rhode Island Medical Society, said Dr. Robert S. Crausman, chief administrative officer of the state Board of Licensure and Discipline. The committee notified the medical board, and Anderson agreed to turn in his license, which he had obtained in 2007. Crausman said that the board had not heard of any problems with Anderson's care of patients. "It was a self-report, a voluntary referral to the Physicians Health Committee," he said. "But as sometimes happens, people fall out of treatment." |
