WARWICK, R.I. -- Students at Pilgrim High School were forced to evacuate their school for about 30 minutes around noon Friday after fire in a first-floor bathroom filled the corridor with smoke. Battalion Chief David Goslin said the fire in a toilet paper dispenser in the men's room in the 700 wing was initially detected by smoke detectors linked to the Fire Department and appeared to "self-extinguish" before the firefighters arrived. But the smoke generated by the fire was enough to cause fire officials to order an evacuation of the entire building while firefighters cleared the hallways of smoke. There was no immediate determination as to who caused the fire. |
