PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Atty. Gen. Patrick C. Lynch chose a radio talkshow, hosted by one of Rhode Island's most famous convicted felons, to announce that he intends to be on the ballot next year as a candidate for governor.

The term-limited Lynch, a Democrat, was unavailable for further comment on his choice of venue for his announcement.

"I have every intention of having my name on the ballot as governor in September [2010] if there is a primary,'' he told former Providence Mayor Vincent A. Cianci Jr. during the last part of an interview on WPRO Friday morning.

Lynch added that he has been focused on the race for governor, and will continue to work toward it, evaluate and "formally announce sometime in the future, ideally on your show."

Audio: Listen to the full podcast of Cianci's interview with Lynch.

Lynch faces a potential primary fight with state Treas. Frank Caprio and Lt. Gov. Elizabeth Roberts among others.

The federal Operation Plunder Dome investigation into corruption in Providence City Hall sent Cianci to federal prison for more than four years.

I think the ProJo's just mad Lynch didn't announce through them... why else go out of their way to talk about Cianci in such a fashion?

Maybe they'll publish comment, since they didn't post my last contribution, because it criticized them.

Excellent factual reporting from the Projo. He is everything they stated and more! Only bad thing about Vincenzo is he didnt get more years in jail!

Don't we all know that Mayor Cianci is a convicted felon? Do we have to be reminded in every story that includes him. Also, wasn't this story about Patrick Lynch announcing he was running for govenor? What did operation Plunder Dome have to do with that?

I really don't think they give a damn about Mr. Lynch's bid for govenor, I think ProJo just likes to stick it to Cianci when ever they get a chance.

Who really cares? Just another political hack who will ruin our state with side deals for their political friends.

Cianci is a crook. He has two felony convictions. The state's top law enforcement officer should not appear on his show.

From the non-prosecution of the West Warwick town officials in the station night club fire to the non-conviction of the assailant in the state trooper assault trial to the story in today's Journal about the teen driver who killed the mother of two in West Warwick getting no jail time and so on and so on, its hard to get excited about the thought of the Attorney General becoming our next governor.

If he will allow the unions to be placed in their back pocket he'll have plenty of support. After all it's been said by those higher up in the unions that they lavish politicians with 500.00 dinners so they can "work the system" kinda like they're doing to Fung right now in Cranston. Don't cross the unions or you'll be out!!

I would be proud to have AG Lynch running our state

Lynch should start off his campaign with a slogan starting with "Big Audit".

"I would be proud to have AG Lynch running our state."
I would be even prouder if liberalism were banned in Rhode Island. Liberals would vote for Charles Manson if he were on the Democrat ticket.

slammie said:

Yahoo NOT. He has lost EVERY major and non major case in this state and shoved his illegal beliefs down our throats oh yeah we neet this jerk

I will put money on the fact that the felon who just got out of federal prison will also run for mayor again and the stupid voters will elect him.

ONLY IN RI!!! Hey Buddy boy can not even vote but he'll be mayor again and PL will be there with him. what a crew and then PLs brother will run for AG what a zoo.

keemosabe said:

Patrick Lynch for governor? God help us all. He hasn't done a damn thing as AG, and I expect the same as governor. He's nothing but an extension of the corruption swallowing our state.

Crash said:

He is just another spoiled political brat. God I hope he doesn't get it. But leave it to the flipping idiots that vote, he might just get in.

Ken Perry said:

What a joke. This clown does not have a chance.
He was a lousy Atty Gen'l. Why would anyone vote for him??? Thank God Caprio is running, he will crush him. This whole Lynch clan is a sham. You
never know about the RI Voter. Look at Murphy,
W Warwick and all his henchmen.

Roland said:

Oh great, now we have Opie running for the top spot.

What's next? Cicilline?

Huh? said:

Cianci's convictions were relevant because Lynch is AG. To me, it only highlights the fact that Lynch has done nothing to prosecute any public corruption case while AG.

Lynch performed miserably during the Station Fire disaster. He botched the Smoke Shop raid. And he lost a case in which the defendant nearly killed a state trooper.

Lynch has been the worst AG in the past 30 years. It's amazing that he's even considered to be a serious contender for Governor.

TPM said:

The man has been a very average AG and is simply not qualified to deal with a billion dollar deficit and run the state. He is a horrible orator as well.

Most of these comments sicken me. Atty Gen Lynch has handled the most difficult job in the state with honor and dedication. Its one thing to have a negative opinion, but the viciousness and insulting nature of some of these comments are shameful. Patrick Lynch is an honorable and dedicated public servant, who has had a scandal free administration, has worked tirelessly for the safety and protection of the public and deserves our gratitude. Not these vicious, cowardly and anonymous attacks. To the poster said that he "performed miserably during the station fire", "botched the smoke shop raid" and "lost a case in which the defendant nearly killed a state trooper", you should know that the Governor, not the Attorney General ordered the Smoke Shop Raid; with respect to the Station Fire, that case was handled by career prosecutors that were prosecutors before Patrick Lynch became AG and will be prosecutors long after he is AG, which they should be. The state needs career prosecutor like Randy White and Bill Ferland. You obviously have no idea extraordinary the skills these people possess and sacrifices they make to protect the public. With respect to the state trooper assault case, that case also was handled by career prosecutors, and involved an off duty trooper that had been drinking and interjected himself into a volatile situation, when what really should have happened is the local police should have been called to the scene. His injuries were unfortunate, but a jury decided to acquit the defendant. There was nothing lacking in the state's presentation of the case to the jury, the facts led to the verdict. Any trial attorney would know that that case could have gone either way. To blame that verdict on the Patrick Lynch is absurd.

Obviously more people need to be reminded of just what Cianci is.....

How many felons have walked since Lynch became Attorney General? And now he wants to run the state? What a laugh.

anne2bill said:

Who cares what venue Lynch announced his intentions to run on. Leave Buddy alone, as I recall he served his time. Dispite his conviction he really did a wonderful job of revitalizing downtown Providence and making it a place that visitors wanted to come to... As to Lynch and any others running for that office GOOD LUCK WITH THE MESS YOU WILL INHERIT... the only thing anyone has going for them in that run is that the 4 year term means they will have a job for 4 years.. (unless there is a recall provision)

Scuba Steve said:

Finally someone with a heart and a brain running for gov. You got my vote!!

God help us all...Lynch...Cianci......what next Joe Mollicone

..."hosted by one of Rhode Island's most famous convicted felons"? How about "reported by one of Rhode Island's most incompetent newspapers"? What does Lynch's announcement have to do with Cianci's conviction?? It is a shame that Providence does not have an actual legitimate NEWS paper (notice emphasis on "news" rather than "opinon"). Your organization continues to prove that you have no idea of what actual reporting of the news is about. You need to hire some grown-ups.
