PROVIDENCE -- A Johnston man charged with slitting his 70-year-old stepfather's wrists in March was found to be a probation violator Thursday and sentenced to serve nine years of a suspended sentence from a previous crime, the Johnston police said Friday.

Dino A. Dalessio, 45, who has been at the ACI since his arrest on March 2, is facing a charge of assault on a person 60 years or older in connection with an attack on his stepfather, John Remka.

At the time of his arrest in that incident, Dalessio had been on probation from a 1991 conviction for first-degree sexual assault. He had been ordered to serve 12 years of a 21-year sentence in that case, with the remaining nine suspended.

Police Maj. Ralph Bubar III said that after a two-day hearing, Superior Court Associate Justice Robert D. Krause ruled that police had collected enough evidence to find that Dalessio had not fulfilled the conditions of his probation, particularly one that he keep the peace.

The investigation into the attack on Remka is continuing, Bubar said.
