PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The Rhode Island Interfaith Coalition is planning a day-long conference on fighting poverty with faith starting at 8 a.m. Wednesday at the Roger Williams Park Casino. A coalition, made up of 50 of the state's faith-based groups and social action agencies, will open with a review of sacred texts that relate to poverty, according to Marty Cooper of the Jewish Federation of Rhode Island. The rest of the day will be devoted to a review of the state of poverty in Rhode Island, along with workshops on what congregations can do in the areas of housing, legislative advocacy, hunger and employment opportunities for youths and young adults. Cooper said the conference is designed for community leaders. More than 150 have registered so far, and since space is limited to 200, Cooper said it is possible some people could be turned away. He can be reached at (401) 374-1396. The coalition, formed in July, is part of a national faith-based initiative to cut poverty in half within 10 years. |
