Seventy paintings by famed illustrator Norman Rockwell will be on display at Newport's National Museum of American Illustration, beginning Sat., June 6, the museum announced Friday. The exhibit, "Norman Rockwell: American Imagist," will feature works from all phases of Rockwell's career, including dozens of the original cover illustrations he created for The Saturday Evening Post and other publications. Running through Labor Day, it is the largest Rockwell show ever mounted in Rhode Island, according to museum officials. "We've done some checking, and we think this is the biggest Rockwell show ever in the Ocean State," said museum co-director Laurence S. Cutler. Cutler said the exhibit was originally mounted for the Naples Museum of Art in Naples, Fla., but that the response there had convined him to bring it to Newport. "The reaction (in Naples) was overwhelming," Cutler said. "I think they broke all their attendance records." Located at 492 Belleve Ave., the museum also announced a package of expanded hours and reduced ticket prices designed to attract visitors in what Cutler called "a really tough economic environment." Beginning Saturday, the museum will be open for self-guided tours from 10 to 4 p.m. on Saturdays and 11 to 4 p.m. on Sundays. It will also open on Fridays at 2 p.m. for 90-minute guided tours. Tickets are $18 for adults, $16 for seniors and military personnel, $12 for students and $8 for chidren ages 5-12.
