R.I. House OKs medical-marijuana bill by wide margin

PROVIDENCE -- Three years after legalizing medical marijuana in Rhode Island, House lawmakers this evening OK'd a plan to create drug dispensaries that would sell the drug to those allowed to use it for medicinal purposes.

The Senate has already approved an identical version of the bill, so each chamber now need only pass each other's version for the legislation to receive final approval.

Governor Carcieri, a long-time critic of medical marijuana, is widely expected to veto the bill.

But the House approved the proposal in a 63-5 (with 7 members not voting) --- a wide enough margin to easily override a veto. House Majority Leader Gordon D. Fox indicated tonight that the leadership will seriously consider that option.

More than 600 patients are now legally authorized to use medical marijuana for certain chronic conditions and debilitating diseases.

this is finaly the right direction for our government to take. Anyone who smokes knows this is the least harmful drug..if anything should be illegal its cigarettes...anyway there are lots of good reasons marijuana in small controlled amount should be legal...thanks to all who voted yes.

This state is really sinking fast. This is the next best thing to selling MJ on the street legally.
This will setup an open black market on this stuff. We have some really dumb legislators!

Well, Govstench, "This will setup an open black market on this stuff. We have some really dumb legislators!" seems to be one of those pot-calling-the-kettle statements. Did you bother to do any research on this subject? Not only that, but if marijuana WERE legalized and taxed at the same rate everything else is here, then we'd all be a lot better off! However, compassion centers are a long, LONG way from overall legalization. Please do at least a little research before drawing a conclusion.

How do I open one? I hope in my lifetime it gets legalized...I really do...
