Warwick Mayor Scott Avedisian, a history buff, recently visited the city's namesake in England - again. It's about 3,240 miles from Warwick to Warwick. Despite the distance, the British town and its namesake city in "the Colonies" have maintained diplomatic ties for decades.

A Newport detective fires a shot at the pickup truck of a suspected cocaine dealer on Farewell Street after the suspect rams his truck into a police cruiser in an attempt to flee, the police said. The bullet struck the truck, causing no injuries, and the suspect surrendered and was charged with felony assault and possession of cocaine, the police said.
25 years ago today:
Five officers have received the Providence Police Department's highest award for bravery for the parts they played in a Feb. 7 shootout in which a bank robber was killed and a patrolman he had taken hostage was wounded. Patrolman Osvaldo R. Castillo, Capt. Jeremiah P. Murphy, Det. Lt. Paul J. LeBoeuf and Detectives Donald Schobel and Stephen J. Springer on Monday received the Medal of Valor, an award that only about a dozen other officers have received in the department's history, according to Lt. Donald W. Lawton, head of the Personnel Bureau.

On this day in 1960, the Soviet Union shoots down U.S. U-2 spy plane over Sverdlovsk.
