Commencement exercises for New England Institute of Technology on Sunday will be missing one ceremonial aspect -- the traditional handshake graduates share with school officials as they receive their diplomas. "In light of public health concerns raised by recent influenza outbreaks, New England Institute of Technology is taking precautions at this Sunday's commencement ceremony to limit direct contact between graduating students, college staff and other participants," the institute said in a written statement. "The traditional handshake portion of the commencement ceremony will not take place. The college asks that any participant, including family members and college staff, who is experiencing flu-like symptoms not attend commencement out of consideration for the health of others. New England Tech's commencement begins at 11 a.m. at the Rhode Island Convention Center in Providence, where former NFL quarterback and Massachusetts resident Doug Flutie will deliver the commencement address. More than 1,100 students will receive associate's or bachelor's degrees. |
