PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Harold L. Tillinghast Jr., a former organizer in Rhode Island for the Laborers' International Union of North America, is scheduled to appear in federal court on Wednesday and plead guilty to a labor racketeering charge. Tillinghast, 44, of Cranston, will appear before U.S. District Court Judge William E. Smith at 2:30 p.m. for a "change of plea hearing.'' A spokeswoman for U.S. Attorney Robert Clark Corrente declined comment until the plea agreement is unsealed Wednesday. Last November, Tillinghast, Nicholas Manocchio, 55, of Cranston; and Gerald Diodati, 59, of Seekonk, were indicted on charges stemming from a kickback scheme involving Rising Sun Mills, a redevelopment project on Valley Street in Olneyville. All three men have pleaded not guilty to charges of conspiracy to violate the labor-management relations act and aiding and abetting. Court records show that Manocchio and Diodati plan on fighting the charges at trial. CORRECTION: An earlier version of this story, posted at 4:50 p.m., gave the wrong date when Tillinghast's plea agreement is expected to be unsealed. |
