MIDDLETOWN, R.I. -- Five people were injured in a three-car accident Sunday night at the intersection of West Main Road and Greene Lane, the Middletown police say. The accident happened around 10:35 p.m., when a car driven by Gwendolyn Hadlock, 21, of Medford, Mass., began to turn left at the intersection, the police said. Her car was struck by an oncoming car driven by Christopher P. Chitwood, 30, of 65 Locust Ave., Portsmouth. A third vehicle driven by Sultana E. Green, 22, then struck Chitwood's car, according to a police report. All three drivers and two passengers riding in Hadlock's and Chitwood's cars were transported to Newport Hospital for injuries ranging from serious head and neck trauma to neck and back pain, the police said. Neither speed nor alcohol appear to be factors in the accident, the police said. It remains under investigation. |
