PROVIDENCE -- The state's first kosher food pantry opened Tuesday morning. The pantry will "help families in our community who are faced with tough choices in this hard-hitting economy," said Susan Adler, a member of the food pantry committee. Needy families can now "observe Jewish dietary laws," she said. "We don't know yet how many people we'll be serving. We hope we don't have to serve a lot. But there's a need for it." The pantry, in the old Colibri building at 100 Niantic Ave., is open on Tuesdays and Fridays, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., except on Jewish holidays. The pantry is run by AgeWell RI, a group that includes the Jewish Seniors Agency, Jewish Family Service and the Jewish Community Center of Rhode Island. Volunteers will help families unable to reach the pantry. All donated food items must be certified kosher. A number of synagogues and other Jewish institutions are serving as collection points. |
