PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The condition of a driver whom the police said was speeding when he crashed at rush-hour Thursday evening while merging from Route 10 north onto Route 95 north has been upgraded to fair, according to Rhode Island Hospital. Richard Parece, 37, of Hanson, Mass., was thrown from the 1990 BMW he was driving after he lost control of the vehicle around 6 p.m., Lt. Paul Olszewski said Friday morning. The vehicle traveled over the curb divider on the left shoulder, went airborne, crossed over two lanes of traffic, landed on the roadway and spun 180 degrees and continued moving until it came to rest when it struck the center barrier, according to the preliminary accident report by the state police. Because he was thrown from the vehicle, it appears that Parece was not wearing a seat belt, Olszewski said. Traffic came to a standstill during the rush-hour commute after the crash, which Olszewski said remains under investigation. (This entry was first posted at 7:56 a.m.)
