CRANSTON, R.I. -- School Supt. M. Richard Scherza's days of leading the Cranston School Department are coming to a close.

The 62-year-old educator told faculty and staff members Wednesday that he is retiring as of June 30.

"I've been mulling it over for the past few months," he said. "I just thought it was a decision to make at this time in my life."

Scherza came to Cranston in 2004, serving two years as assistant superintendent before taking over as superintendent.

He said he plans to stay involved in education, "but at a different level" than he does now, working 50 to 60 hours a week. He also said he will be available to help Cranston with the transition to a new superintendent.

School Committee Chairman Michael A. Traficante said the committee will discuss the position at its next meeting, scheduled for Monday, and will decide in the coming weeks how to fill the position. He said it is his hope that the committee will consider Assistant Supt. Peter Nero before looking outside the district.

"He has a wealth of experience. He has a tremendous working relationship with both staff and administrators," Traficante said.

Thank you Mr. Scherza for your service. You have lead the district during very difficult times and you have done a good job with little financial support.
