Bus detours, schedule for Cox Rhode Races this weekend

PROVIDENCE. R.I. -- Nearly 5,000 runners are expected to compete Sunday in the second annual Cox Rhode Races weekend events.

The runners range in age from 8 to 76. Some are coming from as far away as Germany, Australia and the United Kingdom to compete in this unique event that features the Cox Sports Marathon, Willow Tree Half Marathon and a 5k race.

The Rhode Island Public Transit Authority has announced changes in bus schedules to accommodate the races; more on this and race schedule on the next screen.

The race schedule of events is as follows:

Saturday -- Health & Wellness Expo, Westin Hotel, 1 Exchange Terrace.
* Henry Rono, who once broke four world records in an 81-day span, will sign his book, Olympic Dream from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
* Brothers Mark & Jay Kruger, participants in The Biggest Loser, will be on hand to discuss their experience, maintaining their weight loss and their goals for running the Willow Tree Half Marathon from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
* Rono and runner Geoff Smith will speak at a pasta dinner at Uno Chicago Grill, Providence Place mall. To 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Sunday -- The Cox Sports Marathon & Willow Tree Half-Marathon will start at 8 a.m. at Exchange Terrace. The 5k will start at 11 a.m. on Washington Street between Burnside Park & the bus depot at Kennedy Plaza. Winners of each race are expected to cross the finish line on Exchange Street at these approximate times: Willow Tree Half-Marathon, approximately 9 a.m.;
Cox Sports Marathon, approximately 10:20 a.m.; 5k: approximately 11:15 a.m.

The races are sponsored by Cox Communications and Johnson & Wales University. Charitable partners include Cox Charities New England, the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society Team in Training, the National Kidney Foundation and Gloria Gemma Breast Cancer Resource Foundation.

Bus detours will be in effect from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Exchange Terrace will be closed for the duration of the race.

* Route 27 (Manton Avenue) and Route 28 (Hartford Avenue): Trips into downtown Providence will travel the regular route. Trips leaving downtown Providence will travel via Washington Street, right onto Memorial Boulevard, right onto Fulton Street, right onto Dorrance Street, left onto Washington Street, right onto Service Road #8, left onto Broadway and will return to the regular route.

*Route 33 (Riverside), Route 34 (East Providence), Route 35 (Rumford), and
Route 78 (Beverage Hill): Trips into downtown Providence will travel the regular route to Steeple Street, left onto Memorial Boulevard, right onto Fulton Street, right onto Dorrance Street, right onto Washington Street, and will return to regular stop. Trips leaving downtown Providence will travel the regular route.

*Route 92 Green Line - East (Eastside Market): Trips into downtown Providence will travel the regular route to Steeple Street, and Memorial Boulevard, a left onto Memorial Boulevard, right onto Fulton Street, right onto Dorrance Street, and right onto Washington Street. Trips leaving downtown Providence will travel from "M" stop via Washington Street to regular route.

*Route 92 Green Line -West (Eagle Square): Trips into downtown Providence will travel the regular route. Trips leaving downtown Providence will leave the "M" stop via Washington Street, a right onto Memorial Boulevard, right onto Fulton Street, right onto Dorrance Street, left onto Washington Street, right onto Service Road #8, left onto Atwells Avenue, and will return to the regular route.
