QUINCY, MASS. -- Grocery customers can get a full refund for bean or soy sprouts packaged by Chang Farm and bearing certain expired code dates, Stop & Shop Supermarkets advised Friday. Chang Farm of Whatley, Mass., issued a voluntary recall for specific products that have the potential to be contaminated with listeria monocytogenes. Only 10-pound bulk and 12-ounce retail products with the following expiration dates are affected: Chang Farm Bean Sprouts, 12 oz UPC 0 29899 01003 7, "Use by" May 23, 2009 or May 24, 2009. Chang Farm Soy Sprouts, 12 oz UPC 0 29899 01001 3, "Use by" May 23, 2009 or May 24, 2009. The recall was issued after a sample from a retail store in New York tested positive for listeria, a posting on the non-governmental U.S. Recall News Web site said. All grocery stores, food services and other retailers who have this lot in Massachusetts, Connecticut, New York and New Jersey are advised to remove the product. Consumers are advised to discard the product or return it to the place of purchase for a full refund. Chang Farm said it has received no reports of illnesses associated with consuming the product. Stop & Shop advises customers who have purchased the affected products to discard any unused portions or bring their purchase receipt to Stop & Shop for a full refund. Consumers may call Chang Farm at (413) 665-3341 or Stop & Shop customer service at (800) 767-7772 Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. for more information. Customers can also visit the Stop & Shop Web site. Listeria monocytogenes is a bacteria that can cause flu-like symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, neck stiffness and nausea. |
