PROVIDENCE, R.I -- The president of the regional government of the Azores will visit Rhode Island College on Monday, Memorial Day, and he plans to meet with a group of students who will visit the Portuguese island chain this summer. Carlos Manuel Martins do Vale Cesar and his wife, Luis Maria, will attend a reception at RIC President Nancy Carriuolo's campus home. They will meet seven RIC students who will spend the month of July studying Portuguese culture and language on the islands of São Miguel, Faial and Teceira. The students will explore the region's marine industry and agriculture, as well as its history, language and culture. "Approximately 10 percent of Rhode Island College's students are either Luso-American or of Portuguese-speaking heritage," Carriuolo said. "The college is proud to support cultural connections that will enhance their opportunities." An anonymous donor has financed the student trip. The Autonomous Region of the Azores is a nine-island archipelago located in the Atlantic Ocean and is part of the Republic of Portugual. |
