According to the Associated Press, the singer called Brown to say that a family emergency would prevent her from coming to Providence. To "me": Yes. You have to show up in person to get a Brown honorary degree, so Ms. Franklin will not receive her honorary doctorate this time around.

No, they will award her the degree in absentia. Her receiving the degree was not contingent on her attending the ceremony.
