PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- A union representing 2,300 workers at Rhode Island Hospital announced today that it has ratified a labor contract that provides raises and protects against layoffs through 2013. Teamsters Local 251, which includes maintenance workers and non-clinical support staff, is the largest in the Lifespan hospital network. "When negotiations began with Rhode Island Hospital several weeks ago, we were adamant about protecting the job status of our members while seeking an increase in wages," Joseph J. Bairos, secretary-treasurer and principal executive officer of Local 251, said in a statement. "Although the health-care industry is faced with its own unique set of challenges, we did not waver in ensuring the livelihoods of our membership." "With all that is taking place in the health-care industry in our state, this new contract with Rhode Island Hospital is a major victory for our membership," said Kevin F. Reddy, president and business agent of Local 251. "We appreciate the administration's recognition of the vital role our members play in the day-to-day operation of the hospital, and are very pleased with the advances made with this agreement." Skilled maintenance, including plumbers and pipefitters, will receive a 4 percent raise retroactive to Wednesday. The larger group of clinical support staff, including cafeteria workers and housekeeping staff, will receive a 4 percent raise next April 1. All union members will receive annual Sept. 1l raises as follows: 1.5 percent in 2010, 2 percent in 2011 and 2012, and 5 percent in 2013. Lifespan includes Rhode Island, Miriam, Bradley, and Newport hospitals. |
