Today's front page reports that a jury has cleared former corrections officer James D. Proulx of assaulting off-duty Rhode Island State Trooper Brendan Doyle after Doyle confronted him for driving recklessly in downtown Providence.

And Nicholas Gianquitti, a former Providence police officer, testified that he was acting in self-defense when his shot and killed his neighbor James Pagano, a Cranston fire lieutenant.

Crime increased 12 percent in Providence last year.
